What was formerly an island of lawn and dying trees has been converted into a rain garden, a switch that Merrillville officials hope will help alleviate flooding and filter stormwater runoff with the help of more than 2,000 native perennial plants.

As part of the project on 54th Court, driveway aprons and portions of the street that had been damaged by previous flooding were repaired.
