MERRILLVILLE | A project to build an administration and education center for Merrillville's Stormwater Utility has been delayed.
Last month, the Stormwater Management Board awarded provisional contracts for construction of the facility at 7404 Broadway, but the utility has decided to seek new bids after it completed value engineering work for the new building, said Matt Lake, executive director of the Stormwater Utility.
Lake said value engineering involves looking for ways to reduce costs.
He said the property for the new center is being prepared for construction.
New contracts could be awarded this year, but the construction might not begin until the spring, Lake said.
The utility had been working out of Merrillville's Public Works facility on 73rd Avenue, but stormwater officials on Thursday moved operations to office space available at 9111 Broadway.
Lake said he appreciates Public Works officials provided space for the Stormwater Utility, but the location was too crowded for both departments.
He said the utility will continue to rent the office space on Broadway until the new facility is open.
"I know my staff is happy," Lake said of moving into the temporary location.
The new phone number for the utility's temporary office is (219) 472-8668.
