MERRILLVILLE | Indiana American Water is wrapping up a project on Broadway, but more work is slated to occur in 2014, the water company said.
Joe Loughmiller, an Indiana American Water spokesman, said a new 20-inch ductile iron water main is in place between Deerpath Road and 80th Place.
Workers still could be in the construction area finishing up restoration work, Loughmiller said.
There have been lane restrictions along the east side of Broadway while the 20-inch water line was installed. Those restrictions, which backed up northbound traffic on Broadway, have been needed so vehicles associated with the project can access the construction area.
H&G Underground Utilities, of LaPorte, was hired by Indiana American Water to handle the water main replacement work completed this year, Loughmiller said.
In 2014, Indiana American Water also plans to install a new line on Broadway from 80th Place to U.S. 30, Loughmiller said.
Indiana American Water couldn't complete that portion of the project this year because the company hadn't secured easements needed for that work, Loughmiller said.
The new water main installed this year and the line that will be put in place next year are stronger and will last longer than the former 16-inch cast iron line that was installed in the 1960s, Loughmiller said.
The 16-inch line that was replaced this year had a break Oct. 31.
Multiple homes were surrounded by water and at least five homes had water reach their crawlspaces or basements after the break.
Last year Indiana American Water installed a new 20-inch water main along Broadway between 93rd Avenue and U.S. 30.
