MERRILLVILLE | Money Smart Week in Northwest Indiana sponsored its first Money Smart Week Kids Video Contest this month, and Pierce Middle School in Merrillville swept all three top awards.
Students from grades 6-8 were asked, “Every investment has a certain amount of risk and an expected return. Imagine you are speaking to an investor; describe how investing in you (such as paying for college or technical school costs) will produce a return. Please be sure to discuss what types of risk the investor would face.”
Students from Northwest Indiana submitted videos of up to 90 seconds through the Money Smart Kids Contest on YouTube.
“I am so thrilled that we are able to bring another ‘first’ to Money Smart Week...bringing new technology to the classroom," said Dian Reyome, Financial Capabilities coordinator at Centier Bank and chairman of the Money Smart Council.
"We were able to help them (teachers) accomplish that goal. This is the start of many more Money Smart Kids Video Contests not only in Indiana, but nationally.”
The winners are all eighth-graders, Brandon Dawning in first place, D’Amani Cundiff as first runner-up and Ramon Garcia as second runner-up. The prizes were an iPad2 for Dawning, an iPad Mini for Cundiff and an iPad touch for Garcia.
“It is very important that we educate our young people in the areas of finances and financial literacy. When we look at the economy today and understand the hardships some of our students have had to endure, it is vital to their future that we help them to understand the importance of investing and saving for their future," said Kim Kincaid, teacher at Pierce Middle School.
"I am thrilled that the three winners this year were students from my class. They are wonderful young men and I know they will be successful in all they do,” she added.
