MERRILLVILLE | A Merrillville town councilman's home was burglarized Tuesday, police said.
Town Councilman Ron Widing left his home in the 900 block of West 61st Avenue about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday to head to work, Merrillville police Detective Cmdr. Robert Wiley said.
A neighbor contacted Widing that afternoon to inform the councilman his dog was outside.
After heading home, Widing noticed a front window to his home was forced open, Wiley said. The break-in was reported to police about 3:45 p.m.
"I was shocked," Widing said of the burglary."It shocked the hell out of me."
Widing declined to provide additional comments because the situation is still being investigated, he said.
Two televisions, two laptop computers and a sleep apnea machine were reported stolen from Widing's residence, Wiley said.
Merrillville police Detective Joseph Cooper is investigating the case, and officers said they had no suspects as of Wednesday afternoon.
Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact Cooper at (219) 769-3531.
