MERRILLVILLE | A 19-year-old Merrillville man was skateboarding Sunday night when he was struck by a Merrillville police squad car, the Lake County Sheriff's Department said.
The Merrillville officer was responding to a call with his squad car's lights on when the incident occurred about 9 p.m. near 75th Place and Madison Street, Robert Arnold, deputy commander of staff services for the Sheriff's Department, said in an email.
The victim initially was taken to Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus, but he was airlifted to another location about 2 a.m. Monday, Arnold said.
He was not certain about where the man was taken.
The injuries the victim suffered and his condition were not immediately available.
Arnold said the case is not complete and Lake County police continue to investigate the situation.
Merrillville Police Chief Joseph Petruch has said he is praying "for a full and speedy recovery" for the man, but he can't provide additional comments about the situation because it remains under investigation by Lake County police.
