MERRILLVILLE | Police are investigating two armed robberies of Merrillville businesses that occurred within hours of each other.
An undetermined amount of cash was taken about 10:30 a.m. Friday from the Citizens Financial Bank branch at 6101 Harrison St., said Jim Lilley, Merrillville's chief of detectives.
The suspect displayed a gun during the incident, Lilley said.
The suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 175 pounds, according to a police report. The person was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a scarf and blue jeans during the robbery.
Another armed robbery was reported about 6 p.m. at Cash Advance America, 6077 Broadway.
Lilley said a man in a wheelchair entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded money.
The person got out of the wheelchair during the incident and jumped over a counter before leaving the business with an undetermined amount of cash, Lilley said.
He said the robberies appear to be unrelated and the investigation of the incidents continues. Police have made no arrests.
Anyone with information about the robberies can contact Merrillville police Detective George Fields at (219) 769-3531.
