CROWN POINT | Prosecutors on Monday charged a temporary mail carrier with disposing of 14 bundles of newspaper mailings in a Dumpster at a Merrillville church.

Cedric Ward, 47, is charged with theft and official misconduct, both felonies.

A probable cause affidavit states area residents reported seeing a postal carrier dump the mailings in a Dumpster at SS. Constantine and Helen Church on the 8000 block of Madison Street.

The mailings were addressed to residents of the Tiberon Trail Apartments on 52nd Drive, also in Merrillville.

The mailings were recovered by the postmaster of the Merrillville branch of the Postal Service after being alerted by residents.

Ward denied dumping the mailings, telling authorities he brought the undelivered mailings back to the post office because the mail boxes were too full.

A surveillance camera from the church and post office records confirmed Ward as the individual seen dumping the mailings about 7 p.m. Aug. 12, the affidavit states.
