MERRILLVILLE | Town leaders think some residents have been mistreated when seeking services at Town Hall.
During Tuesday's Town Council meeting, Councilman Richard Hardaway said he has fielded concerns from residents regarding rude treatment they have received from town employees.
"I can only be quiet for so long," Hardaway said.
A recent complaint came from a resident who told Hardaway he has been trying to receive assistance from the town to have his property restored following water infrastructure work completed several years ago.
The resident said "no one has helped him" each time he has sought assistance, Hardaway said.
Hardaway also was informed an employee told a resident Hardaway is "a difficult person to work with" and "agitated."
Council President Carol Miano said she also has received complaints about employees being rude to residents.
"You have to take care of the people," Miano said.
She said she has informed department heads of complaints after she has received them.
Hardaway and Miano didn't identify employees who they believe mistreated residents or the departments in which they work.
Councilman Shawn Pettit said he thinks there are other personnel issues that need to be addressed. He suggested scheduling a two-hour executive session to discuss the problems.
Pettit said he knows of one issue that "ain't gonna be pretty." He didn't elaborate on the matter.
Hardaway and Miano said taxpayers fund the wages received by town employees and elected officials and taxpayers deserve fair treatment from the town.
"No one should ever say I was treated rudely by the town of Merrillville," Hardaway said.
