MERRILLVILLE | An elderly woman who lives in the 6400 block of Ellsworth Place was the victim of scam artists who walked uninvited into her home, police said.

The incident, in which $100 in cash was taken from the house, was reported to police at 4:14 p.m. Tuesday, police Sgt. Bob Wiley said.

Prior to the incident, the woman's husband had stopped by the police department to report seeing suspicious looking men in a van who were asking him questions, Wiley said.

Once the man left to go to police, the four men walked into the home without knocking and told the woman her husband had given them permission to enter.

The men told the woman they were there looking for water problems and distracted her by having her turn on the water.

The men were seen leaving the house in a light brown or tan full-size Dodge van.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (219) 769-3722.
