MERRILLVILLE | The League of United Latin American Citizens Council 5009, Merrillville, is a not-for-profit civic organization that provides scholarships to Hispanic students throughout Northwest Indiana.
The Council's 27th annual Scholarship Luncheon was held Aug. 11 at Turkey Creek Banquets on the Green.
Council President Ricardo Paz Sr. presented this year's awards to the following scholarship recipients:
Darius Arriaga, of St John, attending IUPUI; Salina Baez, of East Chicago, attending Purdue University Calumet; Megan Cantu, of Crown Point, attending Kansas State University; Abraham Garcia, of Merrillville, attending Indiana University Bloomington; James Kinsey, of Sheridan, attending the University of Wyoming; Emily Langston, of Crown Point, attending Purdue University West Lafayette; Samantha Loza, of Portage, attending Indiana University Bloomington; Melanie Montemayor, of Hobart, attending Butler University; Mariah Pol, of Portage, attending Indiana University Bloomington; Jeanette Salazar, of Griffith, attending Purdue University West Lafayette; and Ruben Villarruel, of Crown Point, attending Valparaiso University.
Merrillville LULAC Council 5009 has awarded more than $178,000 to more than 300 Indiana high school and college students since being chartered in 1984.
"We are proud of the accomplishments of our council. We are the only council in the state to be awarded National Council of the Year not once, but twice, for our service to the community and advancing the needs of Hispanics," Paz said.
