CROWN POINT | A second man has been charged in connection with last year's fatal shooting of a cashier at the Lucky Mart Foods in Merrillville.
Donvell Edwards, 22, of Merrillville, was charged March 20 with murder, murder in the perpetration of a robbery and robbery in the fatal shooting of Judi Simpson-Beaver in March 2012.
According to a probable cause affidavit, a third man who received immunity in the case, Edward Lee Perry, told police that he, Edwards and Jeremy Blue were together when Edwards talked about robbing the Lucky Mart in the past. Edwards said there would be money and a safe on the floor, the affidavit states.
Edwards asked to borrow Perry's gun, to which he agreed, the affidavit states.
Perry told police Edwards was wearing a white "Jason mask" with black straps before leaving Gary for Merrillville, according to the affidavit.
Blue drove Perry and Edwards to an apartment building near the store, court records state. Edwards gave the gun to Blue, who put on the Jason mask and a zip-up hoodie, the affidavit states.
After a time, Blue came back to the car from the direction of the store with two black cash registers, the affidavit states.
Blue got in the backseat of the car, saying, "I shot her," according to the affidavit.
Blue, then 20, was charged with murder, murder during perpetration of a robbery and robbery in March 2012 and is awaiting trial.
Edwards was convicted of robbing the store in 2007, court records state.
