MERRILLVILLE | A project to construct a facility for the town's Stormwater Utility is closer to fruition.
The design for the building, which will be constructed at 7404 Broadway, is complete, said Matt Lake, executive director of the Stormwater Utility.
The structure, which will serve as the utility's administration office and education center, has received multiple town approvals.
The project still requires special exception approval from the Town Council. Councilmen are expected to discuss the zoning request during a council workshop Wednesday.
The council could make a decision about the special exception during its June 26 meeting.
Lake said the Stormwater Utility will soon begin to seek bids for the project. The bids will be opened July 17, Lake said.
The Stormwater Utility currently operates out of limited space available in the Public Works building on 73rd Avenue.
The new facility will have many features, including space for stormwater officials to conduct water testing and provide educational services to Merrillville residents, town leaders said.
The structure also will have environmentally friendly features.
The Stormwater Management Board purchased property for the new facility in November last year. A building on the land was demolished to make room for the new structure.
