MERRILLVILLE | Through their efforts, Merrillville Intermediate School students helped Santa Claus make this Christmas brighter for dozens of needy children.
The students collected $1,160 for a Toys for Tots program in the community, led by Lola Caldwell’s sixth-grade Yellow Team homeroom, which collected $158 to earn a pizza party.
Student Council members, along with Student Council sponsor Victoria Baldwin, headed to Wal-Mart in Hobart to pick out toys for the children. Each MS student was given a $25 limit per child, and teams were grouped with a parent chaperone. Calculators and price checks were used to make sure no one went over their budget.
Many kinds of toys were chosen - from balls to trucks and dolls to Legos. When the shopping spree was done, 353 toys for all ages were bagged and the Student Council members enjoyed lunch at Golden Corral before heading back to class.
Pastor Edward Sims Jr. of Victory Life Christian Center came to MIS to pick up the donated toys that will go to children of needy families from East Chicago, Gary, Griffith, Hammond, Munster, Whiting, and Merrillville. families who receive government assistance. The families who signed up picked up their gifts Wednesday at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary.
Pastor Sims gave Baldwin a crisp $100 for the Student Council to recognize its efforts towards this community project.
"All 1,000+ MIS students should be proud of themselves for helping this worthy cause during this season of giving," said Rose-Ann Wilson, MIS technology coordinator.
