Kennedy Pony’s persistence and determination recently earned the 15-year-old a summer internship usually reserved for college students.

Pony began working in July for The Arsh Group in Merrillville, a company specializing in landscape architecture. She plans to study architecture or graphic design upon entering college.

“I feel blessed and fortunate that Mr. Taghi Arshami and his colleagues at the Arsh Group gave me this incredible opportunity,” Pony said.

“It gave me a chance to try out a career I’m interested in. I wanted to learn what architects actually do.”

In addition to filing, Pony was able to explore AutoCAD and PhotoShop programs during her two-month internship.

“I enjoyed learning how an office runs. The internship taught me responsibility, such as showing up for work on time, and the importance of communicating with one’s co-workers to avoid certain mistakes,” she said.

The daughter of Bernard and Aleisa Pony, Pony is a sophomore at Valparaiso High School, where she is involved in student council and the art club.

She was named a Key Club Member of the Month, and recently received an award for her drawings from the Valparaiso Kiwanis Club.

Pony plans to attend Purdue University, the University of Chicago or Columbia University. A member of The Love Church in Merrillville, she enjoys editing videos and photography.
