MERRILLVILLE | The Merrillville Public Works Department will start its Spring Clean Up Program on Monday. Branch and leaf collection vehicles will pass through the town one time only, April 7 through 19.
Leaf collectors will manage Merrillville’s residential yard waste. Because the leaf collectors are vacuum units, only loose leaves will be collected from the curbside or the edge of the street. Do not place leaves in cans or in plastic/paper bags.
Be sure to keep leaves and branches in separate piles.
The week of April 7 will include all Merrillville residents who live north of 73rd Avenue, and the week of April 14 will include all Merrillville residents who live south of 73rd Avenue.
Before the collection week, place leaves in a narrow pile or row in the grassy area between the sidewalk and the curb. If your area is without curbs, place leaves within five feet of the street. Do not rake leaves into the street, ditches or drainage swales.
Keep parked vehicles off the street during the collection week. The town crews will not return to the piles that are passed over due to vehicle obstruction.
If leaves and branches are not collected immediately, please be patient as collection services adjust during the week due to inclement weather or unforeseen delays.
Yard waste placed for collection should be free of waste oil, chemical contaminants, tree limbs, cans, rocks, bricks, garbage, and any other foreign objects and substances.
Collection will begin each day at 7:30 a.m. Have leaves and branches ready on the Monday morning of your collection week.
Dumpsters will be provided for use by Merrillville residents during this period only at the Public Works facility at 13 W. 73rd Ave. Dumping will be permitted from 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. All residents must present a driver’s license to the Public Works office before dumping.
