MERRILLVILLE | A Thursday afternoon fire at a vacant apartment unit has been ruled an arson.
The small fire started about 3 p.m. in the unit in the 300 block of West 59th Avenue, Merrillville Fire Marshal Phil Topor said.
Two people in another unit in the building were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, Topor said.
The fire didn't displace residents, he said.
Topor couldn't provide details regarding what was used to start the fire.
The Merrillville Fire Department is collaborating with Merrillville police in the investigation of the incident.
