MERRILLVILLE | Unity A.M.E. Zion Church is celebrating 17 years of uniting people to God and each other through Jesus Christ.
The community is invited to share in the celebration on March 3 at 11 a.m. at Unity A.M.E. Zion Church, 5757 Massachusetts St. This year’s speaker will be Rev. Dr. Jeffery L. Tribble, Sr. is Associate Professor of Ministry at Columbia Theological Seminary and Presiding Elder of the Augusta District of the A.M.E. Zion Church. Dr. Tribble was a special guest at Unity’s Introduction to the Community in 1996.
Rev. Dr. David I. Neville, Jr. is the Founder and Pastor of Unity A.M.E. Zion Church. On March 25, 1995, Rev. David I. Neville, Jr. presented a proposal and plan to the late Bishop Enoch B. Rochester regarding the establishment of Unity A.M.E. Zion Church in Merrillville. On March 28th, Bishop Rochester told Rev. Neville to “Go Forward” with the plan for Unity. Unity’s Inaugural Service was held March 10, 1996 at the former Paradise Banquet Hall. Unity A.M.E. Zion Church rented the Paradise Banquet Hall for two years and purchased the property which is now the Unity A.M.E. Zion Church building.
Unity A.M.E. Zion Church has grown to more than 100 members. Its ministries include children, youth, and young adult ministries, My Sisters Keeper, Praise Dancers, Praise Singers, Feeding the Flock and others. Unity has birthed 5 ministers who include: Rev. Judith Neville, Rev. David Neville, III (now in Valencia, Calif.), Rev. Dr. Jean Hope, Rev. Rebecca Neville, and Bro. Pierre Strickland.
