MERRILLVILLE | Merrillville Town Court operations have not halted since a new sprinkler system leaked water into one of its offices at Town Hall.
Town Court Judge Gina Jones said all court operations have moved to Merrillville's Civil Court office, which also is located in Town Hall.
The Civil Court office will take payments and handle other requests that have typically occurred in the court office that sustained water damage.
Town Court hearings will occur as scheduled in the council chambers in Town Hall, which wasn't impacted during the leak, Jones said.
Several large fans were placed inside the court office to dry the area, Jones said.
Town Councilman Tom Goralczyk said a leak occurred in the space while the sprinkler system was tested Wednesday morning.
Council President Carol Miano said there were about 2 inches of water in the office.
No court records were lost during the incident, but there was water damage in the space, town leaders said.
Jones said ceiling tiles were damaged when the water leaked and one computer might have been broken.
New carpeting was recently installed in the office during a renovation project at Town Hall. Jones said most of the new carpeting must be replaced.
She said the court experienced issues with its Internet access and network, but it was expected to be addressed Thursday.
Town officials haven't determined when court employees will begin using the space again.
