MERRILLVILLE | The Merrillville Town Court office sustained water damage after a new sprinkler system leaked water into the space.
Town Councilman Tom Goralczyk said the leak occurred while the sprinkler system was tested Wednesday morning.
Council President Carol Miano said there were about 2 inches of water in the space.
"It was saturated," Miano said of the office.
She believes computer equipment and other items were damaged in the space, but no court records have been lost, Miano said.
Workers were at Town Hall on Wednesday to remove water from the office and repair the sprinkler system, Goralczyk said.
The town also has removed items from the office so repairs to the space could begin when it is dry, Miano said.
Town Court was the only department in Town Hall where water leaked. Town Court operations will continue while the situation is addressed, Miano said.
The new sprinkler system was recently installed in Town Hall during a renovation project there.
"Everything was brand new," Miano said of the sprinkler system.
