MERRILLVILLE | A Merrillville woman is concerned for the safety of her family after shots were fired at her home Friday morning and a threatening note was found on her property, she said.
The woman said she heard the sound of two shots about 4:30 a.m. while in her home in the 1400 block of West 82nd Place. At the time she didn't realize how close they were to the home, which is in the Sedona neighborhood.
Her husband also found a note on their property, which made the situation more alarming, the woman said.
A portion of the writing was illegible, she said, but what could be read was shocking to her.
It stated "we're coming for you," the woman said.
She said it was later determined the shots she heard hit her house.
One shot appeared to enter through the garage of her home and traveled into a closet. Another bullet pierced the house, but it didn't completely enter it, she said.
"I don't know of anyone who would want to do this to my family," she said.
The woman speculated the note and shots were intended for someone else.
"You got the wrong one," she said.
The woman contacted the Merrillville Police Department. She said police checked the area and took statements from her family.
The woman said she appreciates the help received from the Police Department, but she understands "there's only so much they can do."
She wants other residents to be aware of the situation so they can be watchful of their surroundings and report suspicious activity to Merrillville police.
"Our lives have been threatened," she said.
Merrillville police confirmed they received a report of the situation and investigators are are looking into the matter.
There are no suspects at this time, police said.
Anyone with information about the matter is asked to call Merrillville police at (219) 769-3531.
