MERRILLVILLE | The Lake County Sheriff's Work Release program is helping Merrillville clean up its streets.
A crew of inmates collected trash Wednesday morning on 61st Avenue between Harrison Street and Broadway, Town Council President Carol Miano said. The men are serving time for misdemeanor offenses.
Miano said the crew will clean several locations in town that have been littered with garbage.
She said 73rd Avenue, Merrillville Road and 57th Avenue are among the streets that will be cleaned.
The crew also will visit town property in the 7200 block of Broadway to remove trash and debris from that site, she said. That land will eventually become a park to honor local unions.
The town will demolish two dilapidated structures on that property before the area is cleaned.
"It will look so much better," Miano said of the property.
The work release program also will provide services in other communities in the county until early fall, Miano said.
