MERRILLVILLE | Police are searching for suspects in two unrelated shootings this weekend in Merrillville.
A 15-year-old girl suffered a leg injury during a shooting late Saturday near 78th Avenue and Hendricks Street.
The girl was among a group of people walking east on 78th Avenue about 9 p.m., Merrillville police Detective George Fields said.
A dark-colored sedan approached the group, and a passenger in the car yelled something at them before three to four rounds were fired at the group, Fields said. The car fled the scene after the shooting.
The girl was shot in the leg and taken to a local hospital. Fields said the girl remained in the hospital Monday.
Fields said it's unknown what prompted the shooting.
In a separate case, shots were fired about 8:30 p.m. Sunday into a home in the 5900 block of Grant Place, Fields said.
There was a disturbance at the residence earlier in the day that wasn't reported to police, he said.
A person involved in the disturbance reportedly left the home after the situation. The person later returned to the residence and fired into the house, Fields said.
There were no injuries reported during the Grant Place shooting, Fields said.
Police have made no arrests in either of the cases.
Anyone with information about either of the shootings is asked to call Fields at (219) 769-3531.
