Valparaiso, Harvey soldiers complete their basic training
Army National Guard Pvt. Andrew S. Russell and Army Pvt. Andrea K. Burns graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, they studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
Russell is the son of Gayle Russell, of Valparaiso. He is a 2011 graduate of Valparaiso High School.
Burns is the daughter of Margaret Mobley, of Harvey, and granddaughter of Lessie Mobley, of Chicago. She is a 2012 graduate of Thornton Township High School, Harvey.
Homewood-Flossmoor grad finishes training in Texas
Air Force Airman Deonte X. Harris graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness along with basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Harris is the son of Renee and Dion Harris, of Homewood, and grandson of Earnastine Harris, of Chicago. He is a 2011 graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
