MUNSTER | The Boy Scouts of America of Calumet Council annually honor an individual who has made significant contribution to the community. This year, Bill Masterson Jr. is the honoree at the 2013 Distinguished Citizens Dinner Benefit for the Calumet Council, Boy Scouts of America.
The dinner will be held Wednesday at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts.
Masterson, 52, became publisher of The Times Media Company in November, 2006, and later added the title of Operating Vice President for Lee Enterprises, overseeing media companies from New York to Oregon. He is leaving Lee this month to become vice president at Berkshire Hathaway's BH Media Group.
Since coming to Northwest Indiana, Masterson has been active with efforts to unite a diverse region. He was responsible for creating a movement called “One Region: One Vision,” bringing leaders of the many and varied interests of the area together for identification of regional issues, discussion, and working for the common good of all residents.
He served as chairman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana and Barden Gary Foundation, sand was named the Lakeshore Chamber’s Businessperson of the Year in February.
Masterson’s newspapers have been awarded three Lee President’s Award during his tenure and in 2004 he was individually awarded the Lee President’s Award for Innovation for his efforts to drive political revenue into newspapers nationwide.
In 2009, The Times of Northwest Indiana was recognized as the fastest growing English-speaking newspaper in the country. In 2010, The Times was awarded the prestigious “Enterprise of the Year” for all Lee properties and in March, 2011, The Times was recognized as one of the "top five newspapers in the nation that do it right."
Masterson has not only been recognized in the community, but also nationwide. Last October, he received recognition as “Publisher of the Year” by the industry magazine Editor and Publisher.
