A woman was killed in Munster early Tuesday morning, the victim of an apparent homicide.
Erica Veldinia, 33, was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m. at The Community Hospital in Munster, according to the Lake County coroner's office. She suffered a fatal injury from a blow or blows to the head, which occurred at 882 Boxwood Drive, according to the coroner's office. The coroner's office listed Veldinia's address as 10652 South Avenue N, Chicago.
Officers were called Tuesday morning to the Boxwood residence for a disturbance, according to a Munster police news release. When officers arrived, a man outside said he was beaten by his girlfriend's estranged husband and that the husband was still inside the woman's residence, possibly armed.
Police said they tried to make contact with the husband, but he barricaded himself inside and would not talk to officers, who then called in a SWAT team. The SWAT team deployed a remote-controlled robot inside the residence, and the suspect surrendered, according to the news release.
Veldinia was found inside with trauma to her face and head. She was rushed to Community Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police said the suspect is in custody, and charges are pending, according to the news release.
Neighbors at the Sutton Place Condominiums, where the incident occurred, said police officers came to their doors about 7:30 a.m. and told them to stay inside.
The condominiums are in a quiet subdivision just northeast of the corner of Calumet Avenue and Main Street.
Police said more information would be released Wednesday.
