MUNCIE | Bill Nangle, executive editor of The Times of Northwest Indiana, was honored Wednesday at the Ball State University Department of Journalism annual awards luncheon.
John Strauss, adviser for the student newspaper, said Nangle was given a citation for his service in journalism. Strauss nominated Nangle for the recognition.
"I always admired his commitment to journalism and his great energy," Strauss said.
Strauss cited Nangle's commitment to open records as one of the reasons for nominating him for the recognition. In 1998, Nangle and The Times of Northwest Indiana were part of a group of Indiana newspapers that tested open records practices in 92 counties. The project eventually led to the creation of the Indiana Public Access Counselor's office.
Nangle began working at The Times in 1970 as an assistant city editor when the newspaper was based in Hammond.
