MUNSTER | American Legion First District, comprised of Lake County posts, recently held its 77th annual High School Oratorical competition and scholarship program at Munster High School. Open to all high school students, contestants deliver an 8- to 10-minute speech on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with emphasis on the attendant duties of citizenship. The contest is segmented into four rounds: District, Zone (regional), Department (state) and Nationals. The first-, second- and third-place national winners receive $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000 college scholarships, respectively. Indiana awards $3,400 to its state winner, with additional prizes at the local level. Thirty high school students from several high schools competed to represent the District at the next level. Calvin Sanders, a senior at Munster High School and last year's District runner-up, won this year's local contest.
