Community Hospital Librarian Joan Zivich has been named to the Medical Library Association’s Hospital Libraries Section Scroll of Exemplary Service. The award was presented during the HLS Business Meeting at MLA held May 18 through 23 in Seattle.

Librarian members selected for this award have made a difference in advancing the cause of hospital librarianship during the past year with activities such as leadership, publishing, service and/or management of special projects/events.

Zivich has been the medical librarian at Community Hospital in Munster since 1987. In December, 2011 she was appointed to the Project Advisory Committee for the National Library of Medicine  and American Academy of Pediatrics. The special advisory committee was formed to improve access of public health information and use of medicine during a national crisis to better meet the needs of children.

She previously served on the National Network of Libraries of Medicine/Greater Midwest Emergency Preparedness & Response Project following Hurricane Katrina, a committee formed to help medical librarians improve disaster preparedness.

The scroll is cumulative from its inception in 2002. Once a person has been awarded a place on the scroll, it is permanent as long as they are a member of HLS.

MLA is a nonprofit, educational organization with more than 1,100 institution and 3,600 individual members in the health sciences information field worldwide. Twenty-three MLA sections represent the varied subfields and areas of specialization of the association’s membership.

MLA members have access to educational opportunities; a knowledge base of health information and an international support network to help promote quality health information to the healthcare community and the public.
