CROWN POINT | Lake Criminal Court Judge Clarence Murray on Wednesday rejected a second plea from drunken driving defendant Michael Temores, who sought to reinstate a jail bond.
Murray revoked the bond of Temores, a repeat offender, last month following a hearing in which a Munster police officer testified Temores was seen driving on Calumet Avenue despite being prohibited from driving as a condition of the bond.
In the latest of more than 100 drunken driving- and traffic-related offenses and charges, Temores, 25, faces multiple charges in a crash that killed 61-year-old Fred Skafgaard, of Lansing, on Dec. 30.
Temores is charged in Lake Criminal Court with 19 criminal and traffic offenses related to the fatality, the most serious being a felony carrying a maximum 20-year sentence upon conviction. No trial date has been set.
On Wednesday, Chicago defense attorney Jack Friedlander again asked Murray to reconsider the bond revocation. Court records indicate Murray denied the request without a hearing Nov. 28.
Friedlander replaces Merrillville defense attorney Steven Mullins on the case.
Murray again denied Friedlander's motion, saying Temores poses a danger to the community based on information from the probable cause affidavit, testimony and Temores' history.
In deciding against releasing Temores from custody, Murray rejected any alternative placement, such as the county's work-release program, as Temores' case winds its way through the court system.
