Dr. Andy Koultourides, of Munster, was a team member on the International Dental Implants Association’s recent mission to bring state of the art oral/dental health care to underserved people in the Dominican Republic.
He joined a group providing completely free dental care, personally offering more than $100,000 of free care during the trip. He provided his own flight, hotel, supplies, materials and all other costs associated with the program.
Basic oral health care in the worldwide communities visited by the IDIA teams is severally lacking even in the basics.
As a Diplomat of the Select International Dental Implant Association, which has 2,000 credentialed members, Koultourides was part of an elite team led by Dr. Arun Garg, president of the IDIA to administer surgical care and prosthetic care to more than 250 patients on the April trip.
The team of more than 40 doctors delivered in excess of $2 million in medical dental care to their grateful patients, and Koultourides and his colleagues claimed it as one of their most rewarding experiences.
Patients now have or are on the road to permanent tooth replacement, which will result in better nutrition and increased self-esteem for patients who now have confidence to seek retail or tourism-based jobs in a country that requires a friendly smile.
