HAMMOND | A Michigan man accused of robbing banks in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Kentucky had his first appearance Tuesday in federal court.
Beaver B. Russell is charged in the Northern District of Indiana with robbing a Fifth Third Bank in Munster and a Mutual Bank in South Bend, according to an indictment.
Russell, of Benton Harbor, Mich., was arrested in Kentucky in February after leading police on a high speed chase. He's accused of robbing two banks there.
According to a news release from the FBI, Russell is also believed to be behind five purse snatchings in Northwest Indiana, an armed robbery and another bank robbery in Lansing.
Russell admitted to being involved in seven bank robberies in the Midwest, according to the news release.
He will have an arraignment hearing at 10 a.m. Thursday.
