MUNSTER | Wilbur Wright Middle School’s Junior Academic Super Bowl team earned some serious hardware last month in the area competition at Clifford Pierce Middle School in Merrillville. Students competed in the areas of math, science, English and social studies, with the questions focusing on ancient Greece.
Starting with math, Wilbur Wright dominated, answering 20 of the 25 questions correctly and earning first place. Team members Seshan Devanathan, Colin Gaither, Nikki Han and Patrick Wu set the pace.
English teams were next up. After answering 25 questions focused on Homer’s "Odyssey," Sophocles’ drama "Antigone," "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief," and the film "The Clash of the Titans," the Wilbur Wright team found itself in first place with 23 correct answer. Team members are Noah Moell, Hansa Vavilala, Saveda Majety, Alex Raycroft and Perima Shah.
Optics, people, and metallurgy were the science topics, and the scores were close thanks to some challenging questions, but Wilbur Wright was consistent and earned second place with the team of Zachary Dong, Ajeyo De, Rachel Kalbfell and George Babus.
Competing strong in social studies, but not placing, were Nicole Lu, Ravani Sansoya, Kali Konstantinopoulos, Shannon Hocker and Adit Patel.
The last competition consisted of the interdisciplinary team, consisting of students from the four subject areas working as a team to answer questions from all disciplines. Wilbur Wright's Seshan Devanathan, Perima Shah, Ajeyo De, Rachel Kalbfell, Ravani Sansoya and Kali Konstantinopoulos answered 15 out of 25 questions correctly.
When area scores from all host sites were compiled for state, Wilbur Wright earned seventh-place statewide in math and ninth-place in science among more than 70 schools competing in Class 1.
