MUNSTER | The Federal Emergency Management Agency will remove more than 1,550 properties along the west portion of Little Calumet River from flood zone status March 1.

Removal from the flood zone reduces the cost of flood insurance premiums for business and residential property owners.

The official report from the Federal Emergency Management Agency indicates that the 90-day comment or appeal period that began Oct. 4 has expired with no valid requests for changes to the modified flood hazard information, the Munster Town Council learned Monday night.

The Munster properties are located along the Little Calumet River starting where Hart Ditch flows into the river, east of the Northcote Bridge, and ending about a half mile before Hohman Avenue. Hammond properties in this same section also will be removed March 1.

“This is part of the joint application (for a Letter of Map Revision, or LOMR) we did with the city of Hammond to remove properties along the Little Calumet River from the flood plain,” Town Manager Tom DeGiulio said. “This doesn’t go all the way to the state line.”

There are some properties on Hohman Avenue and along Hart Ditch that are still in the flood hazard zone that will require additional analysis, he said.

In addition, a Jan. 30 memo from Town Engineer Jim Mandon stated that Christopher B. Burke Engineering LLC had completed the survey field work and analysis on five additional houses that were excluded from the original Letter of Map Revision.

That work “shows that all five remaining houses should be taken out of the flood hazard district,” Mandon said in the memo. “The next step is to complete the filing documents for these individual LOMAs and submit them to FEMA.”

Mandon’s memo indicated the five houses should be officially out of the flood hazard zone “around the same time that the LOMR takes effect, March 1.”

The Crown Point-based engineering firm did all the original LOMR work for Hammond and Munster.
