From national retailers and warehouse operators to small shops offering unique products, Munster boasts a blend of businesses. Creating a business-friendly environment and forward-thinking economic development takes teamwork from town officials, boards and commissions; the Chamber of Commerce and other agencies and foundations.
A sampling of businesses shows the diversity of enterprises that call Munster “home”.
For 47 years, Giovanni’s Fine Italian Cuisine at 603 Ridge Road has been a landmark on the culinary scene in Munster, providing guests with the finest freshly-made and made-to-order fine Italian cuisine.
“We give people what they want,” says Mary LoDuca, owner and daughter of Giovanni’s late founder, Procopio LoDuca
Today those traditions established by Procopio continue and include offering guests gluten-free pasta and other gluten-free items menu items such as fish, risotto, eggplant and chicken dishes, Mary says. Giovanni's features expertly prepared veal, pasta, seafood and other Italian delicacies created with the expertise of Chef Chris Pohl.
Everything is prepared fresh daily, based on the availability of ingredients in the market, and the chef also welcomes special requests, Mary says. Giovanni’s also offers ever-changing daily specials for lunch and dinner.
“We always have two fish dishes, two meat dishes, two pastas, dessert specials, and drink and wine specials that include a special martini,” she says.
Information about those specials is available on Giovanni’s web site, http://www.giosmunster.com/. Here visitors will also find links to the restaurant’s Facebook page, mobile VIP club and email club.
These links allow Giovanni’s to connect with long-time and new patrons, and help customers save money, Mary says. For example, Facebook friends have a chance to win a large pizza, with one winner each month.
Join Giovanni’s E-Rewards Club and receive a free brushetta appetizer as well as other savings. The Mobile VIP Club provides texts of specials and gives members a chance to win a $25 gift card, Mary says.
Dine in, carry out or let Giovanni’s cater your next event. Restaurant seating is available from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and from 5 to 11 p.m. on Saturday. Enjoy the live musical entertainment from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.
“We have a banquet room that can seat up to 65 people,” Mary LoDuca says. “Because we open at 5 p.m. on Saturday, customers can book that room for showers, receptions, funeral lunches or other special events from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a minimum of 30 people.”
Hartsfield Village, a Continuing Care Retirement Community located in Munster, offers a wealth of services and amenities to the residents to allow them to truly experience what we mean when we say “Living Well, Living Wise,” says Ken Orze, director of marketing for Hartsfield Village Senior Living Community.
Sponsored by Community Hospital, Hartsfield Village is a Senior Living Community located at 10000 Columbia Ave. that provides its Independent residents with priority access and reduced pricing for Assisted Living, Memory Support and Nursing Care, if ever needed.
Experts on successful aging have long promoted the critical importance of staying actively involved mentally, physically and socially with others. The Hartsfield Village Wellness program, combined with the scheduled recreational and social activities, provides the opportunity for residents to do just that; stay actively involved.
In these challenging times, the extent of change and unpredictability in our world has many seniors delaying any decisions regarding their own future Senior Living plans and needs, Orze says.
For several years now, reductions in home values and in retirement assets, combined with worldwide uncertainty over political unrest, war, the global economy and natural disasters has resulted in delay and in the reluctance of seniors to make decisions regarding their future living plans.
And yet, it is quite common for seniors that are exploring their options to comment that they are worried and stressed over the cost and responsibility of maintaining their own homes. They also mention that their social opportunities are now limited and they often feel isolated and even lonely.
The good news is that optimism about our future seems to be making a comeback! Many feel that the “worst is over” and that there is good reason to believe that it is time to start exploring options and making plans, says Orze
Residents at Hartsfield Village often comment about enjoying the benefits of physical exercise, cognitive workouts, healthy meal options and educational opportunities, all with our goal of providing residents with the tools they need to age well.
“We continue to revise and promote hospitality programs that focus on service and opportunities to socialize,” Orze says.

ROSE REAL ESTATE/DIVERSIFIED COMMERCIAL
The father-son team of Dennis and Mike Larson specialize in commercial and residential real estate and have expanded the business to include several divisions that cover a broad range of property development, investments and management.
Diversified Commercial Real Estate & Investments started out in Lansing on Bernice Road, said Dennis Larson, who founded the company 20 years ago. After completing a redevelopment of the Physicians’ Supply property at the corner of Ridge Road and Hohman Avenue in Munster, the Larsons opened Rose Real Estate as part of that development. Today the office is located at 8037 Euclid Ave. in Munster.
“We like Munster. It’s a stable neighborhood, an aggressive town in terms of economic development,” says Dennis Larson. “There’s easy access to the city where I do a lot of business and meetings. It’s also easy to get to the airports. Yet living in Munster means living in a quiet community.”
During the last 20 years, the Larsons as Diversified Commercial have completed real estate and development deals in 40 states, he says, and that access to the airports is vital. The team is licensed in Indiana, Illinois and Florida.
Among those developments are 85 Cracker Barrel restaurants, Cabela’s out lots in Hoffman Estates, the Indianapolis Boulevard redevelopment in Hammond north of the Borman Expressway and the old Service Merchandise building in Griffith.
Munster has been home to a number of projects this company has completed including the Dunkin’ Donuts on Calumet Avenue and the development at Main Street and Calumet Avenue with the CVS store, Horizon Bank and the Munster Animal Hospital.
“We have made presentations to the Town Council and the Zoning Board and have always thought they were looking out for the town’s residents and yet have been fair to us,” Dennis Larson says.
When his oldest son, David, came into the business, he opted to sell residential real estate and Rose Real Estate became a division of Diversified Commercial. David moved on to Florida and is a real estate broker there.
A division of Rose Real Estate Inc. is Rose Property Management, which provides premier management services for greater Northwest Indiana and South Chicagoland, Dennis Larson says. Headed by Pam Wisler, this company offers full-service management, association services and commercial services for property owners. Among the services provided to owners are reports, accounts receivable and collectible, general ledger, accounts payable and work orders.
Mike Larson brings an expertise in commercial and industrial real estate sales and development to the company, his father says. “He’s the future of the company.”
