MUNSTER | Renovations at Community Park’s ball fields are continuing at a rapid pace to allow Little League teams to begin their regular season April 15.

The Munster Redevelopment Commission, which consists of the five Town Council members and a School Board member, unanimously approved funding two projects for the second phase of park redevelopment.

Olthoff Inc., of Lynwood, was given the green light to install underground utilities. The company agreed to hold its 2-year-old prices, Town Engineer James Mandon told the commission.

This part of the project needs to be finished before the hardscape, including asphalt paths and concrete sidewalks north of the ball fields, can be installed.

In late February, the town received three proposals to install that hardscape. Rieth-Riley’s bid of $72,680 was below the $78,000 estimated cost for hardscape. Mandon recommended the bid be awarded to Rieth-Riley, which has offices in Gary.

Walsh & Kelly, of Griffith, bid $82,765. A bid by Gariup Construction, of Gary, came in at $89,070.

“Right now we have temporary stone on those paths,” Mandon said.

The construction of the asphalt paths will have to wait until the asphalt plants open in April, he said.

“We began the scheduling process so everything is ready for this season,” Mandon said. “If we have rain, we’ll be delayed. If we have a typical year (of late winter/early spring weather), we will be ready by opening day.”

The 2012 Little League season had to be shortened because of park construction, and the All-Star games were scheduled out of town.

The Redevelopment Commission controls the tax increment financing money being used to do major renovations at Community Park. TIF funds can be used for this multiphased project because it is located along Calumet Avenue in the Munster TIF district.
