MUNSTER | The Munster Town Council approved a $18,425 contract for the removal of nearly 100 trees.
Area Outdoor Services, of Gary, will cut down 94 ash trees and one cottonwood tree and remove two large limbs.
The trees, which are to be removed by March 15, are in easement areas adjacent to the Little Calumet River levee along Hawthorne Drive and South River Drive, at the Northcote Bridge and at the River Bend pump station.
The 94 ash trees have been infected by the emerald ash borer.
Jim Knesek, director of operations, said the town plants new trees when old ones are removed.
"I would say there's probably anywhere between 900 and 800 more trees that we'll have to eventually take down," Knesek said.
