Munster bike path work snakes along
MUNSTER | Rainy weather and the 21-day Teamsters strike have slowed progress along the 1.5-mile stretch of the Pennsy-Greenway/Centennial Bike Path running from Main Street to Calumet Avenue in Munster.
However, some work has been done, Robinson Engineering officials said.
The Centennial Bike Path from the Hart Ditch Bridge south has been rough-graded and is ready for the paving contractor. The Hart Ditch Bridge is complete except for the final surface work.
Rough grading from the Green Snake Bridge to Calumet Avenue has been completed and is ready for the paving contractor. But, rough grading still needs to be finished from the Hart Ditch Bridge to the Green Snake Bridge.
The Green Snake Bridge is installed over the snake's habitat area along the golf course's ninth hole. The bridge is being installed to move the path away from several homes that have rear yards that are very close to the old railroad right of way.
"We have been able to resolve a number of drainage issues all along the Centennial Bike Path. These are as important as the bike path itself," said Town Manager Tom DeGiulio.
Ditches have been cut and culverts installed, which has especially helped clear standing water in the backyards of some Somerset and Twin Creeks subdivision homes.
Other portions of Munster bike path system also are on track, the Robinson Engineering report said.
