MUNSTER | Munster High School's Dance Team recently returned from the Indiana High School Dance Team Association state championships with a number of group and solo awards.
The Varsity Elite Lyrical Ensemble, consisting of varsity and junior varsity members, earned first place with a routine choreographed by Anna Merrifield.
"This team took first place in all local, regional and state competitions," said MHS Varsity Dance Team coach Cindy Banas.
The ensemble's routine was unique, Banas added. "This year, we decided to help spread the word on drunk driving. The story was personal to our choreographers, who experienced someone close being hit and killed by a drunk driver. The girls really took to the message and were proud to help spread the word and show awareness," she said.
Other first-place honors for MHS went to the Small Ensemble, consisting of juniors Gina Catania and Sarah Sharpe, and sophomore Calli Chaffin, and Senior Solo – Sarah Sharpe. Both routines were choreographed by Amity McKiddy.
Munster earned second-place honors for Varsity Elite Pom, choreographed by Brandee Evans; Varsity Elite Jazz, choreographed by Amity McKiddy; Junior Varsity Pom, choreographed by Evans; and Junior solo – freshman Caitlyn Baker, choreographed by McKiddy.
A Senior Solo by Calli Chafin earned third place, choreographed by McKiddy.
Fourth-place honors went to Junior Solo –freshman Jackie Dye, choreographed by Courtney Colich, and Junior Varsity Jazz, choreographed by Shannon Dominiak and adjusted by Sam Taylor.
In addition to Banas, Gina Catania and Sarah Sharpe served as varsity dance team captains, while Sam Taylor coached the MHS junior varsity dance team.
