Community Hospital is undergoing a multimillion dollar expansion, yet they are only one of dozens of cutting-edge health care providers located within the Town of Munster.
At Benavente Eyecare, Dr. Jorge Benavente has been providing quality eye exams for hundreds of patients.
“We have the experience and are up-to-date on the latest materials and services,” he says. “Patients here know their eyes are well taken care of.”

At Confidential Care, Dr. Vijay Jayachandran and Dr. Sanker Jayachandran strive to improve their clients’ quality of life by providing services for people with substance abuse and psychiatric issues.
The doctors treat both adolescents and adults, and offer treatments for alcoholism and a wide variety of addictions, as well as behavior and psychiatric disorders.
The doctors provide intensive outpatient therapy as an alternative to inpatient treatment for addictions and psychiatric conditions. This allows patients to recover without separating them from their families or completely disrupting their lives.
Programs include individual therapy, medical tests, medication management and support groups. Dr. Sanker Jayachandran says the practice offers integrated, comprehensive care, with all the necessary services under one roof. All the staff know all of the patients, so patient care is seamless.
“We are available all day, six days a week,” he says. “We give a continuity of care, and in that way we are different.”

Fitness Pointe prides itself on its high standards and quality programs, says Debi Pillerella, the facility’s manager.
“We provide quality programs for all, especially the casual or current non-exerciser looking for a comfortable non-intimidating, medical fitness atmosphere,” she says. “Our staff are exceptionally trained and provide a personal, friendly experience for all members.”
Fitness Pointe, which is part of the Community Hospital and opened in November 1998, has about 40,000 visits per month including patient and non-patient services. It also has been voted Best in the Region.
Fitness Pointe also offers child care services and is home to SpaPointe.
Pillerella says the Fitness Pointe programs are going strong, even at a time when there are downward trends in group exercise programs across the country.
“We have signature classes like Ripped and Zumba that house more than 35 participants per class,” she says. “In addition, our indoor cycling program is flourishing. In May, we will become the first facility in Northwest Indiana to have a Virtual Cycling Studio.”
She says the coach program, which offers small group personal training, is very successful, and the medical fitness programs are the first of their kind in Northwest Indiana.
The MedFit classes are facilitated by degreed exercise specialists and have a three-tiered service line, which provides something for every individual with a medical condition.
Chair dance, aqua dance and chair yoga classes are also popular for the “mobility-challenged” exercisers.
Pillerella says Fitness Pointe is not your typical fitness facility.
“Its mission is to address the whole person, focusing our customer’s overall health and fitness needs integrating mind and body, based on current best practices, using the medical fitness model,” she says.
