MUNSTER | Public sidewalks deemed hazardous because of heaving concrete and tree roots will soon be replaced by the same contractor used since 2006.

The Munster Town Council reaffirmed the sidewalk replacement program for 2013 at a recent meeting. The program has been in effect since 1997.

In 2011, all the public sidewalks in town were re-evaluated and ranked on a scale of 1 to 4, with sidewalks rated 1 presenting the greatest tripping hazard.

The current list of hazardous sidewalks includes 17 on Walnut Drive, 18 on White Oak Avenue, 14 along Columbia Avenue, 10 on Fisher Place, 17 on Woodlawn Avenue, 14 on Sunnyside Avenue and 18 on Hohman Avenue. The order of replacement is still being determined.

In December, Burnham, Ill.- based J & J Newell Concrete was awarded the extension of a contract to hold its 2006 prices to replace hazardous sidewalks this year.

Last year hazardous sidewalks were replaced in 88 locations throughout Munster, costing $106,500, said Jim Knesek, director of operations, in a memo to the Town Council.

Funds will come from 2013 general obligation bonds, gaming revenues and money from the tax increment financing district for commercial areas.
