MUNSTER | To comply with federal requirements for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Town Council approved the final draft of the ADA transition plan at its Dec. 28 meeting.

Indiana municipalities must conduct an inventory of all public facilities and assess compliance with new ADA standards.

According to documents distributed to the Town Council, Munster completed many of the required steps earlier this year. Those included naming Assistant Town Manager Clay Johnson ADA compliance coordinator.

Munster also created a grievance procedure for those with disabilities if access is denied, completed an inventory of all public facilities and provided a plan for updating facilities that aren’t in compliance with the most current ADA standards.

The plan to update facilities is also required by such state agencies as the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Town Council members received a copy of the self-evaluation form. The final document will be posted on the town of Munster website and is available for viewing in Town Manager Tom DeGiulio’s office and the office of Munster Clerk-Treasurer David Shafer.

“We have been going through each of our buildings and filling out the inventory,” DeGiulio told the council. “At one time, Munster was in 100 percent compliance with the ADA. Now it has been changed.”

Those changes to the ADA include clearer intersection markings and new slopes for intersection ramps.

Street resurfacing throughout Munster has made 14 residential streets compliant with the new ADA standards, including State Line Road at 176th Place, Robin Street from Chestnut and Hawthorne, Crestwood Court, Lawndale Avenue from Manor to Forest, Northcote from Chestnut to Camellia, Ridgeway from Greenwood to Columbia and Harrison Avenue from Fisher to Ridge Road.

Other ADA compliance has been achieved with handicapped accessible playground equipment and playground surfaces throughout the town’s parks, DeGiulio said.
