MUNSTER | The Town Council recently approved spending more than $23,200, if necessary, to obtain geographic data from the state’s planned flyover of the western third of Indiana later this year.
The flyover will capture data, including land contours, building footprints, vegetation and impervious surfaces. That information will be available through geographic information software.
Lake County Surveyor George Van Til has presented information about the geographic information systems to the Lake County Council. To date, the county hasn’t committed any money to the project.
However, Munster Town Manager Tom DeGiulio told the Town Council that the information gathered by the flyover will benefit the town. The information will help staff determine fees and provide important building information.
“This will be in addition to what we are already doing,” DeGiulio said. “We need it to get information about underlying utilities, sanitary and storm sewers, water, streets and manholes. GIS is a continuous project (in Munster).”
The system will become interactive, he said.
Munster would pay $23,290.72 if Lake County doesn’t participate with funding. If the county does help fund the project, Munster will pay $1,085.
Funding will come from the utility funds using the GIS system.
