Nineteen local students are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to compete for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million that will be offered in the spring.
The students from Indiana are:
Andrew Hurst and Taryn Trusty, Chesterton High School; Jennette Sink of Chesterton, who is homeschooled; Matthew Lippy, Crown Point High; Harrison Goldenberg, Paulina Kawalec, Saam Mojtahed, Akash Shah, Ashley Talesky and Rathnam Venkat, Munster High; Mary Beggs and Samantha Kowalski, Lake Central High; and Joshua Abatie, Leena Aljobeh, Noelle Eveland, Haley Sorrells and Gavin White, Valparaiso High.
The students from Illinois are:
Maeve Coates Welsh and Brigid Tobin from Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School.
