MUNSTER | Two homes and one business were briefly evacuated Thursday morning following a gas main break in Munster.
NIPSCO crews stopped the gas leaking from a main near Alta Vista and Crestwood avenues just west of Wicker Park after a plumbing crew hit the line around 7:30 a.m., officials said.
Eddie Melton, spokesman for NIPSCO, said gas to the line was shut off at 8:45 a.m.
According to Sgt. Steve Kovacik of the Munster Police Department, a plumbing crew hit the gas line just northwest of the intersection of Indianapolis Boulevard and Ridge Road sometime around 7:30 a.m. The leak caused a strong odor in the area, primarily east of the break.
Kovacik said no one was injured or fell ill as a result of the incident.
Melton said the Walgreen's at the corner of Ridge Road and Indianapolis Boulevard in Highland was evacuated as a precaution before gas was cut to the line. Employees and patrons were able to return after the line was repaired.
Battalion Chief Dave Pelc said two homes on Alta Vista Avenue were briefly evacuated as a precaution and residents were able to return quickly after the line was repaired.
Pelc said the strong winds Thursday morning carried the odor of the gas a long distance, but also helped dissipate the gas.
