MUNSTER | Since she was 12 years old, Cleveland-based photojournalist Janet Macoska has made her mark on the music industry.
With a career spanning nearly four decades, Macoska has shot Rock N’ Roll legends and up and comers, many at the height of their careers. Her work was even featured in the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. The ‘It’s Only Rock and Roll, But I Like It’ exhibit is currently on display at the South Shore Arts Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, until February 3.
“It all started with the Beatles,” said Janet Macoska. “When they came to America in 1964, it changed my life. Rock n' Roll grabbed me and I knew I had to be close to it.”
Macoska had her first image of Sonny and Cher published in ‘Teen Screen Magazine’ when she was 13. Ever since, she has been mesmerizing fans all over the world with her ability to capture rock icons and their brilliant performances, some which include Sir Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Keith Richards, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and KISS.
“People resonate with the images because they were at these concerts and they love these artists,” said Macoska. “Rock n’ Roll communicates to everyone and my images are a documentation of its history that I have had the privilege of being a part of for 38 years.”
Macoska’s passion for music is apparent in her images as they move enthusiasts by personifying the artist’s emotion and raw energy that they put into their show.
“When you look at these photos you feel like you are at the show,” said Emilio Lopez, Rock N’ Roll fan. “They make you think about the history of the artists and what you were doing when you first heard them.”
Macoska feels fortunate because her career has been full of surprises, excitement and inspiration. Macoska’s work has appeared in Rolling Stone, People, US, Vogue, Creem, The NY Times, VH1, to name a few, and also many rockumentaries.
One of Macoska’s most notable accomplishments is her image of Sir Paul McCartney, which is now exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
“I just really love what I do and I am more than happy to share my passion with others who share and appreciate my enthusiasm,” said Macoska.
‘It’s Only Rock and Roll , But I like it,’ 40 years of of photography by Janet Macoska and Anastasia Pantsios can be viewed through Feb. 3. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday noon to 4 p.m.
