MUNSTER | South Shore Arts celebrates the 39th anniversary of its juried Tri-County Junior/Senior High School Art Exhibition, running April 28th through May 26th, 2013 in the gallery at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster, Indiana. A reception and awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5th, 2013 from 1:00 -3:00pm with the awards presentation beginning promptly at 1:30 pm.

Over $5,000 dollars in prizes will be awarded, including the important $2,500 Donald H. Berwanger Scholarship Award for a graduating high school senior to attend an accredited college or university to study fine art. Trophies are awarded for the best overall school display in both the junior and senior high school levels.

Schools from Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties in Indiana and south suburban Cook County in Illinois are invited to participate in this event. The exhibit features original artwork created by students in grades six through twelve from public and parochial schools.

Area teachers submit a list of student work, which is to be entered in the exhibit. The teachers are then invited to install their student’s artwork in the gallery. Seniors competing for the Berwanger Scholarship are entered by their teacher and must submit an application, portfolio, and a letter of recommendation. The exhibition features a wide range of media. Included in the exhibit are drawings, ceramic and sculpture pieces, paintings, photography, fiber arts and animation to name a few.

The juror for this year’s exhibition is Wiley Dummich. Mr. Dummich began his study of art at the age of 13 when he was selected for a special program developed by the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis. Later, this school became a part of Indiana University and is now known as the Herron School of Art and Design.

A U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of Purdue University, Mr. Dummich went on to design and build the Dyna-Soar hang glider in the 1970s. Two special hang gliders were built; one appeared in the TV show The Magician with Bill Bixby, and another appeared in the TV show Planet of the Apes.

In the last several years, Mr. Dummich has began painting and showing his artwork. His work has been exhibited at South Shore Arts; Towle Theater; Hammond Public Library, The Hoosier Salon; and Clowes Memorial Hall at Butler University.

The Juror will choose the recipients of such awards as Best in Show, Awards of Distinction, First in Media, and Honorable Mention for the participating junior high students. Awarded to high school students will be awards such as the Lori Spuehler/Lymperios D. Trikolas III Memorial Award donated by Elaine, Ismail & Aysegul Kisisel and Roseann & James Repko, the Donald H. Berwanger Award of Excellence, Best of Show 2-D and 3-D, Awards of Distinction, Outstanding Awards and Honorable Mentions.
