MUNSTER | Community Hospital’s celebration of National Nurses Week culminated with a ceremony to recognize the most outstanding nurse and top patient caregiver as voted by their co-workers.
Jim Phelan, an Intermediate Care Unit patient care technician, is recipient of the Patient Caregiver Excellence Award, and Christine Hicks, registered nurse with Endoscopy, received the Nursing Excellence Award.
“We celebrate their compassion and dedication, and are proud of the efforts of all of our nurses and caregivers who make a difference in the lives of our patients,” said Community Hospital CEO Don Fesko.
Phelan and Hicks were nominated by their peers for going above and beyond in their respective patient care areas.
Criteria for the Patient Caregiver Excellence award requires the staff member to demonstrate excellence in the areas of dignity, compassionate care, community, quality and stewardship. These standards and values set the foundation for the hospital’s mission to bring quality care to everyone in need.
Phelan, a Munster resident, has worked at Community Hospital for less than two years, but is making an impact on patient care and satisfaction.
According to his nominations, “There have been many times that he has gone above and beyond to help the nurses care for a confused patient or a patient who just needs extra TLC.”
“Patients always ask if he is on duty and are sad if he is not assigned to their room,” said another nomination. Other nominations stated: “He has a great work ethic,” “He never hesitates to help” and “He is a fun person to work with.”
An East Chicago resident, Hicks has worked at Community Hospital for more than 21 years.
Excerpts from her Nursing Excellence Award nominations state: “She does a lot of work ‘behind the scenes’ to assure patients get excellent care” and “She doesn’t just take care of the patients, she also takes very good care of their families. She reassures them regarding their family member's care, and listens.”
Other nominations read: “The word ‘excellent’ is not enough to describe her” and “She makes the staff around her better.”
