MUNSTER | Employees of two businesses on Calumet Avenue were tied up during armed robberies Monday evening and Wednesday morning, according to Munster Police.
The employees freed themselves and called police in both robberies, said Sgt. Steve Kovacik, police information officer for the Munster Police Department.
At about 8 p.m. Monday, three black males between the ages of 20 and 30 walked into the Radio Shack store at 7967 Calumet Ave. in the Calumet Shopping Center. One of the suspects was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun, Kovacik said.
According to the police report, a female and a male employee were ordered into the back room and their hands taped behind their backs.
Kovacik said one suspect is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing about 180 pounds. Another is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing approximately 130 pounds. The third suspect is only described as being in his late 20s.
Electronic merchandise and cash from the register, totaling $20,000, was taken in the robbery, he said.
The three suspects fled in a vehicle. However there is no current description of that vehicle, Kovacik said.
On Wednesday, a black male entered through the back door of the T-Mobile store at 7942 Calumet Ave. shortly after the store opened at 10 a.m. He was armed with a silver semi-automatic handgun, according to the police report.
The suspect tied up the male clerk with wire and left him in the employee restroom. The police were notified of the robbery at 10:35 a.m. when the clerk freed himself.
Kovacik said the suspect is described as about 5 feet 9 inches tall and was wearing a white construction hat, a black jacket with red accents and tan-color Carhartt-type work pants.
An undetermined number of cell phones were taken in the robbery. The value isn’t currently known, he said.
No vehicle was seen at the crime scene, Kovacik said.
Anyone with information about either of these robberies is asked to contact the Munster Police Department at the non-emergency number, (219) 836-6600.
