The Times Media Co. has a new leader who has run community newspapers in Ohio and Oklahoma.
Chris White, most recently the regional publisher for GateHouse Media Inc. in Ohio, has been named publisher of Northwest Indiana's leading media company and the state's second-largest daily newspaper. He officially takes the reins Aug. 5.
White, 46, said he is excited to lead one of the best-performing newspapers owned by Davenport, Iowa-based Lee Enterprises and that he plans to go out and listen to the community.
"This is one of the largest community newspapers in the country," he said. "What we do in the next three to five years will determine what the next 50 to 100 years look like for our industry. Our publications reach more people than ever before and will continue to reach them with new products."
As publisher, White is the chief executive who will oversee all operations.
The Times Media Co. serves Northwest Indiana and Chicago's southeast suburbs in Illinois. The company publishes The Times, nwi.com and specialty publications such as Shore and BusINess magazines.
Lee Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kevin Mowbray introduced White on Wednesday at staff meetings at The Times offices in Munster, Crown Point and Valparaiso.
“Thanks to our strong leaders and teams here in Northwest Indiana, The Times has become not only the premier news and advertising source but also a vital voice for regional development," Mowbray said. "Chris brings an impressive record of similar achievements and will help us continue reaching even higher for the opportunities that abound in this market. As a former publisher here myself, I am thrilled to welcome him."
White came to The Times by way of GateHouse, a media company that publishes 79 daily newspapers and 257 weeklies in small and midsize markets.
In May 2012, he was promoted to publisher of GateHouse Ohio Media and The Repository newspaper in Canton, after serving for five years as general manager and senior vice president for sales and marketing. He has led a regional media group that included three daily newspapers and two weeklies.
Prior to that, he served as regional vice president of sales for Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. and worked with publications in Oklahoma, Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. He previously published The Edmond Sun and the McAlester News-Capital while serving as a group publisher in Oklahoma.
Presstime, the monthly magazine of the Newspaper Association of America, honored White as one of its "20 under 40" class of outstanding achievers in 2002. He's been active in many community organizations that include chambers of commerce, economic development initiatives, foundations and advisory boards.
White and his wife, Laura, have four children.
"I have loved my work in GateHouse and will greatly miss colleagues and friends in Canton, but I see Northwest Indiana as a tremendous opportunity," he said. "I look forward to meeting as many fellow employees, customers and community leaders as quickly as possible."
White said he hoped to get to know as many people in the community as he can, hear what they have to say and then develop goals for the company.
"People in the community will find me very receptive to their ideas and opinions," he said. "It's their newspaper. We'll just run it for them."
White succeeds Bill Masterson Jr., Editor & Publisher magazine's 2012 Publisher of the Year. Masterson was promoted to vice president of publishing for Lee in September 2012 and then joined Berkshire Hathaway in May.
The Times is the only daily newspaper printed seven days a week in Northwest Indiana.
Lee Enterprises is a leading provider of local news and advertising with 46 daily newspapers and an interest in four others, as well as digital products and nearly 300 specialty publications in 22 states.
